What is a KVM Switch?

A KVM Switch refers to a hardware device that permits a user to run several computers using a single keyboard, video display monitor and mouse. They are usually found in data centers where several servers are positioned in a single rack. A KVM Switch enables data centre personnel to attach to any server in the rack. If the administrator wish to change control from one server to another all he needs to do is to simply press the button on the KVM switch. They are generally found in places where space is a premium and a keyboard, mouse and monitor cannot be connected to every server or computer for instance, IT department.

Usually you need to buy the cable if they are not included in the box. But before buying any cable one should verify which cable will best match their requirement as few KVM’s need proprietary cables, which are only supplied by the manufacturer of the KVM you have purchased. For domestic purpose it is advisable that you use only port KVM’s that possess built-in cables which in turn facilitates you to control two computers or servers easily with a single KVM.

KVM Switches are available in diverse styles and consists of different features. Their size varies from 3” by 3” box for household use to large rackmount units which permit you to manage and control 64 or 128 servers or computers. On connecting one KVM to another they will form a daisy-chain which in turn facilitates control of many more servers and computers.

By using Multi-monitor KVM’s you can easily connect servers or computers with multiple built-in-video cards which not only permits two monitors to be connected to a single KVM but also displays video from both video cards in every server or computer.

KVM’s are extremely beneficial to graphic designers, web designers and engineers as few KVM’s like KVM714DV can manage up to 4 DVI (Digital Vision Interface) servers or computers. KVM Switches are also available in a Console like design. The KVM consists of LCD monitor together with a keyword and touchpad mouse. You can generally connect an external mouse by using a port on the front or back of the console. Thereafter, you can easily mount a KVM console which in turn not only facilitates you to save precious space of your server room but also manage and control every server and computer from a specified place with a single keyboard, mouse and monitor.
